Google! Just kidding. A Google search for “good divorce attorneys in my area” is not the best way to find a divorce attorney. Most attorneys these days have a website that can easily be found in a Google search. This is a good thing. But searching for your attorney via Google search is the new version of opening the phone book, closing your eyes and pointing to a name.
Attorney Websites
Attorney websites may draw you in with testimonials about how great they are, or you may even be able to find reviews posted about the attorney on independent websites. The problem with these types of reviews is that you don’t know anything about the people actually writing the reviews. They could be crazy people, or at least people you would never take advice from if you actually knew them. I’m not suggesting you should ignore them entirely, but definitely take them with a grain of salt. Just because a particular client was not pleased with an attorney’s services, does not mean that attorney is a bad one. Most likely it just means it was not a good fit. And just because only good things are posted, doesn’t mean the lawyer is going to be a good fit for you and your case.
Get a referral
The best way to find an attorney that fits your personality and the needs of your case is to get a referral. This means you may have to ask your divorced friends or family members who they used for their divorces. You will likely feel most comfortable with an attorney recommended by someone you know. Your friends or family members may also be able to tell you if they think you would like that attorney’s personality and way of doing business. Maybe that friend or family member didn’t like their attorney but thinks that attorney would be a better fit for you. Or, maybe that friend or family member didn’t like their attorney but wants to recommend their ex’s attorney. I have gotten quite a few referrals from the former spouse on the other side of the case that preferred me (as opposing counsel) to their own attorney.
It may be uncomfortable to bring up the subject of a pending divorce with friends or family members but it really is the best way to get started in finding the best divorce attorney for you. If you don’t feel comfortable speaking with friends or family about the divorce, you can start with a Google search. But if you are using the internet as you main source of finding an attorney, I would suggest meeting with at least two different attorneys to see what is out there. Some attorneys may charge a consultation fee but it is probably worth paying a couple of those fees so you don’t get stuck with an attorney you don’t like after paying the entire retainer.
