Your influence is determined by how abundantly you place other people’s interest first” – Bob Burg. You become a person of influence not by going out and getting what you want but by going out and giving to those in need, by solving problems and lifting people up. Influence is created when your focus is on making a difference in the world instead of just making a difference is your wallet. The secret to success, then, is to be of service. I believe our culture is evolving from a “consumer culture” (where we only ever consider ourselves and our needs, where much of life and love is disposable) to a “service culture” (where we spend our days looking for ways to make the lives of others and, therefore the world, better.) I see examples of this all over, from Henry Rosen who has a passion for underprivileged neighborhoods and created the “Tangelo Park Program” (http://www.tangeloparkprogram.com/about/tangelo-park-program) to Bob Burg who authored The Go-Giver (www.thegogiver.com). Henry Rosen said he was led by God to give away money. He has enjoyed stratospheric success based upon one principle – taking care of others. Bob Burg discusses this principle extensively in his writings.
The interesting thing I have noticed is that there are people familiar with this principle but struggle in the application. I am a person who tends to gather information based on people’s actions above their words. People can say anything, the truth lies in action. I watch people claim to be “service minded” and yet they only do things for people if they can see a path in which they may receive a return in the future. They “serve” but out of selfishness. They do it to get the return in the end. When they’re asked to do something and cannot see how it will ever benefit them, they are suddenly “too busy” and are not motivated to assist. These people struggle financially because people can sense that core motivator a mile away. It comes off as uncomfortable and not authentic.
However, when we can truly serve – when we can look for ways to help people without a single thought to what we might get in return, we become truly successful. Those people exude love, happiness and joy. Those people are attractive, both in personal and professional lives. We want to walk with them because they are so self-less. It is our joy to help them because they make the world a better place. We want to be a part of that world. Those people are always compensated for the good deeds. But, the ironic thing is that they don’t keep score. They don’t worry about “getting theirs” because they know it’s coming, if not in this life then in the next. These are our innovators, our leaders and the greatest business people around. The most common misconception in the world is that we create our own success by doing what is best for us. We say, “She’s a real go-getter” as if it is something warranting pride. In reality, the greatest success lies in growing a heart open to giving and receiving blessings. In this cycle, we find our happy ever after.
